Today, Mandie and I took the Turtle on a pleasant drive to Monkton, MD to Gunpowder Bison & Trading to pick up some bison for recipes over the next few weeks, and “meet the meat” as it were.
We didn’t pick up any steak cuts; mostly ground, cubed, and kielbasa sausage’d bison. However, I will definitely go back and pick up some steaks of some sort for a grill-out during the winter or early spring this year. The proprietor was friendly and conversational and the non-meat items were very interesting. There was buffalo tallow lotion and a “sew your own baseball” kit made from buffalo hide.
Of course, the main attraction was the meat-case. There were the classic cuts like delmonico, flank, skirt and bits like hearts and livers of bison. There were also any number of sausages. We picked up some ground, chunk, and kielbasa sausages along with some jerky for snacks.
While we may not be able to indulge in bison for every meal, I can certainly see us making many trips to Gunpowder Bison & Trading as Liam grows up over the years. Leaner than chicken and oh so tasty! Plus, it’s important for kids to grow up knowing where their food comes from.
